77.eClari§n SERVING THE BREVARD COLLEGE Volume 72, Issue 19 COMMUNITY SINCE 1935 February 23, 2007 Athletes aren't to blame for pool conflict by Aaron Palmer Managing Editor Rumors and assumptions have arisen recently concerning the is sue of what’s to be done with the pool. President Van Horn, spoke with The Clarion last week and gladly answered the questions that have been plaguing the student body. As it turns out, most of rumors are just that. Our campus has been playing telephone and in the process, the information has been misconstrued. According to the President, there has not been a decision as to what will be done with the vacant room. He has been meeting with groups recently to decide what the best use of it would be. As of now, the best use of property and equipment is the main concern. To reopen the pool, the low es timate would be $300,000. That would entail usage to no more than the student body. To open the pool so that it could be used by the community and for college level sports, it would cost much more. Without a diving board, a depth of ten feet is unnecessary and improper The drain would also have to be repaired, which would cause the floor of the pool to be raised a few feet, since the current drain is outdated. Along with these repairs, many other aspects would have to be attended to. The money to reopen the pool would have to be collected from donations. Attempts have been made with no success thus far. The same however would need to be done with the concept of filling in the pool for an additional weight room. There are nearly 90 foot ball players, which is almost a sixth of the student body. There are still many other teams that use the weight rooms, so facilities would benefit all sports teams. The num bers have been viewed as to how many students and how many community members regularly used the pool and the sports teams outweigh those. That is not say ing that the decision is leaning in any particular direction. Other areas of campus have been looked at for another recreation center, such as a pool. People have also been complain ing about the football team ad versely affecting our campus. see Athletes, page 2 Brevard FD is burdened by false alarms on campus BFD on campus Photo J.B. by Tom Cowan News Editor According to BC head of secu rity Stan Jacobsen, the Brevard Fire Depart (BFD) has responded to 45 incidents, over half of which could have easily been prevented. Jacobsen says he was informed of this in a letter he received from the BFD last week. The letter says that out the 45 incidences that the BFD has re sponded to, 36 were due to fire alarms being activated. 16 of the ses these fire alarm activations were caused by smoke from in censes, candles, burnt food and things of that nature. 3 of the fire alarm activations were caused by steam from showers and another 3 were caused by people pulling the frre alarms for no apparent rea son. The remaining 14 fire alarm activations occurred for more le gitimate reasons such as fire drills. but some of them were caused by dust from maintenance work and could have been avoided. According to Jacobsen, it is the BFD’s policy to send a fire truck in response to any unannounced fire alarm activation on campus, even after campus security has responded. Jacobsen says the BFD has responded to 10 incidents this year, 7 of which were false alarms caused by burnt popcorn, smok ing in rooms, steam from show ers, and even someone breaking a window with a snow ball. If inci dents like these continue at this rate, the BFD will have to visit the campus 80 times before the end of the year Jacobsen says that volunteers of BFD would greatly appreciate if members of the campus commu nity would exercise more caution and not create so many false alarms.
